The inevitable beckoning of independent domination soon arrived, and saw Flying Saucer Attack heading off to London label Domino Recordings during 1995 - a long and hard decision for them and I was sorry to see them go.

There should have been more releases of a similar nature, but once more other commitments would curtail any further issues until 1996 when brat-punks Headcase took Heartbeat totally by surprise at a Babes in Toyland gig in Bristol. Flying Saucer Attacks' Dave Pearce and myself embarked on a rare night out, to witness the Babes and support band Wool, and it was during their set that they introduced a couple of "friends" - leaving only their drummer on stage. Two "kids" with guitars took the stage, screamed "We're Headcase" and promptly launched into what can only be described as a raucous barrage of wild punk rawk.

We were that impressed we had to meet them, to pass on our adoration, that done, they then declared they were from Bristol!, and not some exotic backwater in New Jersey as we had supposed - and they were aware of the Riot City label, naming a number of bands as influences - quite a night! It wasn't over yet! - I later learnt one of them was my Dentists' thirteen year old son! Taking Headcase into the studio to record was an experience, their heads down & go method creating some classic punk noise. Their first single took the music press by the scruff of the neck, netting "Single of the Week" in two of the weeklies - & we hadn't paid 'em a penny! With this sort of reaction we were all on a high - though surprisingly sales were not reflecting what had been written. Undeterred a follow up single was completed and once again, somewhat embarrassingly the same thing happened……… |
