FEBRUARY 2002
-----------------

See you next month I said at the end of the previous News Pages....but I didn’t say which month or year! - apologies for such a long delay - a whole load of excuses could be wheeled out but I’ll come clean and admit that time has been non existent - sometimes there just aint the time to write about the things...better they happen than not at all!

Lots of stuff has, and some things didn’t happen - like the Mooz release - which was sad, but problems arose and it became very difficult to resolve them, maybe sometime in the future? who knows....

The Heartbeat History CD that was supposed to be ready when this site was opened! is actually going to be a reality later this year, so many amazing recordings were made back then, many that never saw the light of day, some that I don’t even know who the artist is! many of these will be included and it looks worryingly like being a double CD! but hey, this is our history here - gotta be done.

I’ll take this opportunity to thank one time Private Dick Paul Guiver, without whom this would never have been even a possibility! He has been fantastically supportive of the project and been able to offer help that has enabled us to restore those wonderful old recordings to their former glory. Thanks Paul!

One release that wasn’t covered in the last ‘News’ was the AKO album Find Yourself, mainly because without warning the band suddenly came to my attention around Christmas 2001 and had such an affect on me that I thought “How the hell do I capture this lot before they implode on themselves”, so strong was the performance you had to wonder!

iThe obvious conclusion was to get them into a studio and just put down as much as possible in the hope an album would be in there somewhere!

Well, fortunately there was, and Find Yourself went on to become one of the most highly acclaimed releases of the year in metal/hardcore circles, scoring KKKK in Kerrang and great reviews everywhere.

The band went on to sell out local venues at a regular pace and have continued to build their profile steadily ever since, even attracting some fairly influential followers along the way. (more about that later in the year....)

AKO have worked alongside the likes of AFI, Waterdown, and played a short tour with Shelter on their last visit to these shores.

They are about to embark on a UK tour with Decimate & Foothold, with forthcoming releases on hold for what will hopefully be one of the big surprises of the year! We salute you!!

During the past year a chance encounter with a certain Heidi Leib via email has now resulted in Heartbeat being invited to do a 7” with her much renowned band SIT n’ SPIN - said to be “the best girl band in New York” and who would I be to argue such a claim.

Long time been a fan of these rockin’ gals and to do one of their 45’s is indeed an honor and definate highlight in the labels career.on??

What you’ll get are two unreleased slices of yet another Leib penned classic, “Elvis” - backed up by a great cover of Peppermint Twist. This should be ready for a late March release, and could well be our final 7” release - they just dont do well enough anymore...lets hope “Elvis” proves that to be wrong! as I still think its the greatest format. Do ya stuff Heidi....

Earlier on this year AKO frontman Toby was raving on about an amazing bunch of rabid animals he had seen at Bristol’s Fleece & Firkin playing to about a hundred gobsmacked unsuspecting punters...Americas’ FYDOLLA HO were in town and had taken the place by storm with their unique brand of crazed noise delivered with more sweat & sleeze than a top flight porno flick.

Not quite sure how, but I’m told partly due to the reaction achieved from the AKO album release, the band wanted Trash City to strut their stuff once more over a FYDOLLA HO album - in time to compliment the bands forthcoming seven week European Tour starting in May this year.

FYDOLLA HO

What a privilege! since that gig I’ve been playing the CD non-stop, and here we are about to release the beast for Europe! - a perfect example of what I am always going on about - being able to release music of such great calibar...and its such a rare thing for a small independent (that’s us) to be involved in something of this magnitude....nearly as good as sex, but well, you draw a line somewhere......

The Album is titled “Untied” but hey!, will be guaranteed to tied you up in its excellence - fronted by cult film actress Shawnee Smith, the band kick that much ass ya cheeks’ll ache... Do not miss out on this one.

You can catch Shawnee in the current run of Becker.....then go see this band.

The ELECTRIC PRUNES have been going from strength to strength since they reformed, now with a number of storming live shows under their belt they are ready and willing to come to Europe and show us Euros just what these amazing guys are capable of now.

Having blown the VOXFEST gathering apart in Riverside, Los Angeles and taken New Yorks’ annual garage homage CAVESTOMP to a new high with a 2hour show the band are just itching to spread their message, and having been lucky enough to have witnessed both of the above, it really is quite staggering the magnitude of their performance - that thirty year wait must have been unbearable for them.

As if all that wasn’t enough, they have recorded a new album in their own studio. and in just the way they wanted to - no major corporates breathing down their necks on this one. The result? a truly great album exploring a whole range of musical plains, yet still with that magical trademark “sound” that has earned the Prunes such acclaim over the years. Shimmering fuzzed out guitars, biting vocals, they are still there - whatever their secret, one of them luckily remembered to lock it safely away for that rainy day.

The album ARTIFACT is due for release in the summer, when if all goes well, we’ll see them at the European festivals as well a few dates in England. Can’t wait!
